Learning Modo

I spent the past few days getting to know Modo better. Mostly the UV, retopo, materials, and painting tools. This guy was done in Modo, zbrush and photoshop. I tried to stay away from other applications as much as possible, but did use topogun a little.

Texturing is not done, and there was a problem with the teeth so i have to rebake those maps.

Killing Floor: Twisted Christmas

I was recently lucky enough to work with Tripwire Interactive and finally finished my first real video game freelance gig!! I got to create 10 enemies for Tripwire's Killing Floor, all with a holiday theme. It was pretty intense and I learned a ton from the project. I can't wait for the next one!

I finally got around to doing some low poly and textured pieces.

The skull is part of an environment thing I'm working on. Without spoiling anything, it goes with the angry video game nerd.

The cgtotal challenges were all based around Ice. An ice drill, the abominable snowman, and another creature capable of surviving very cold temperatures.

I'm done with the first two and just starting the low poly creature. I will probably also make the abominable snowman low res and texture him since his silhouette is so clean.

Ice drill: Build up balls of light and shoot them like a HADOKEN. Inspired by ratchet and clank weapons.

Abominable snow man: Mix of chimp and goat. Pose from Mr. Squatch.

Ice creature: Deep sea critter. Mix of angler, eels, translucent fish, and a chicken fetus.

So it's been a while since I've posted but I have been doing stuff, I swear! I got the white mage retopo'd and normal maps made (they are still pretty rough though). The black mage is modeled and ready for zbrush. The difference between the white and black mage pipeline is that the black mages clothes will not need to be retopod' much, I actually planned for low poly this time.

Also started scratching around some creature concepts for a manticore. MUCH more on that later.

I would be farther along on those two, but I found out that 3DTotal is doing a couple of really sweet contests, so I kinda jumped over to those for now. One is a high poly Ice melter, and the other will be the abominable snow man. There are time restraints, so planning and lots of reference images are essential.

"New" Project

While I'm looking for work I am continuing work on my mages. You may have seen the white mage in the flatbook, but here is some more in depth of what's going on with that. First off, the point of the project is to redesign the red, white, and black mages as the different body types.

Plus, I'm either gonna do the Dragoon, or maybe a monster for them to fight. These characters will be retopo'd and textured, posed, lit, the whole sha-bang. Basically a little diorama. So, far the white mage is sculpted, her face needs some work and she needs accesories. The Black mage is partly sculpted, no clothes picked out yet, though. So, the next step is to retopo the white mage, and start designing the black mages outfit.

Pretty sure nothing is new on here that isn't somewhere else on my blog, but never the less this beast took FOREVER to make. Mainly because I have never used after effects before, except for very minor rendering stuff.

It sits at about 2:30 and from all the sites I have looked through that seems to be an acceptable demo reel length. I wanted it a little shorter, but I'm not really willing to rip anything out unless there's a really good reason.

Please comment and critique! Be brutal! This thing has to knock the socks off of any employers/artists I show this too. Even minor stuff could be helpful!

A whole month gone by

Been cracking my head over portfolio stuff. I took a break last week and decided to sculpt a new character and finish my horse by splitting it into a draft horse and a demon horse. More of those three later.

Also finished a green chavant sculpture of a fat guy, not entirely unlike Billy's dad. More of him later as well.

First up is the intro to my demo reel. Not rendered yet, but here is a playblast. The animation is still a little wonky, But with the camera shakes, I don't think it will be super noticeable. Ignore the placeholder meshes, they will be replaced with my weapons and shield.

Also attached is the inspiration for the whole piece from EA Mythic's Warhammer Online.

I also took Bryan's advice and tweaked my blend heads. I re-did the lighting so that much more detail is visible and tweaked the material pretty heavily for more of a clay texture. Sadly the badass decimation plug-in doesn't work for blend shapes, since it re-topologizes based on detail. I wish I would have known about that plug-in earlier, I've been using a workaround through 3dsMax that was kind of a pain.

Here is the draft render (no background yet) for the blend heads. I ended up having to use the level 4 division out of zbrush, anything higher would crash any available computer. I think enough detail is preserved that making really clean normal/disp maps are probably counter productive.

Portfolio Crunch: Now with fiber!

So this Wednesday is the start of what will be the most grueling 10 week crunch I have experienced thus far, and something tells me it will be only the first of many to come.

Up first are some more busts for the blend shape thingy. I'm re-posting the fish-girl and chupacabra-Anubis guy in video form. As well as the last 3 (for now) heads: a mob boss, the basic planes of the face, and the start of a toddler. Not sure if I like the pattern on the fish girl's head...

And after that are the base mesh of my coat of arms: 2-hand orc blade, pump action grenade launcher, and a shield with my logo in place of the Triforce.

SIEGE was this past weekend and I got some really great input on my portfolio stuff, and some very honest criticisms of the Nightmare tower level that I've been doing with Yusuke and Aaron. So one of the many tasks next quarter is to retool most of the assets and textures to make them really pop and actually look next-gen.

Update:
I did some testing in maya just to see how exactly I was gonna do the animated blending of one head to another. So i ended up just using a blend color node in hypershade to blend between one normal map to another (just color in this demo). I initially tried doing really clever stuff with animated gifs, but turns out you can just key the blender attribute :P

Only small snag is that the blender node only has 2 blend targets, I have like 8 heads. So I will have to render each section separately.

Game Jam 2009

So, last weekend was game jam, a 48 hour contest between groups of students from AIA and SPSU to see who could make the best game. All assets, programming, and even game ideas had to be made within the 48 hours.

So my contribution to H.E.A.T. (Hyper Extreme Attack Tanks, lol) was to model 4 tanks, each with its own set of stats. The game itself is sort of a mash-up between Joust, Blaster Master, and Smash Bros. First day was spent on modeling, second day was for title screen and other junk.

Tank 1 is the Slug. Average build, basically the human in D&D terms, ho-hum.
Tank 2 is the Heavy. Obviously has higher attack and defense, but really low jump and speed. Also fire rate is pretty bad.

Tank 3 is the Bike. This one has the lowest attack and the least amount of armor, but it's also the fastest and has really fast fire rate.
Tank 4 is the Pider. Look up Baman and Piderman. Basically average, but with really great jump ability.

They are almost done! Or at least they are progressing along.

So, some more work on the horse. Really trying to get a better understanding of it's anatomy. Once you realize what you're looking at, it's odd how similar their anatomy is to ours.

And the wraith. Textures are mostly done, just got a couple seems to play with. I have been experimenting with ambient and alpha maps on his skin and cloak respectively. I would post actual renders but...

THAT is what maya is giving me right now. The normal map must be completely off the scale. I can either tweak some stuff in maya or I may just render him in unreal. Me, Yusuke, and Aaron are putting together a psychological thriller horror level and I have a feeling he will fit in just great.

Speaking of which we have a segemnt similar to bioshock where when you turn your back, the statues move around. So this is them so far. Gonna clean em up a bit and try to find a plaster matcap (or maybe make one). If not he might be bronze or stone.

Also, the goya sculpt will be getting some more attention now that the wraith and horse are finishing up! WOO!

Nazgul's horse. Just making it a regular horse to begin with. Later it will be emaciated, undead, and posed. Maybe give it that broken back thing that some horses get.

I am seriously sick of messing with this nazgul guy. I never get to spend a big chunk of time on him so It ended up getting spaced out over like 2 quarters. He WILL BE DONE in less than 2 weeks, including most of his horse!!!!!! Beginnings of texturing. I tried reapplying normals, texture etc to lowest poly mesh (around 5k) looks crummy, so i will probably just use a higher subdivision, or crunch a higher one or somthing.

Also his teeth are glowy because of matcap and reversed normals, and he will be MUCH paler.

just an update on goya

After I finish up a few things, I am going to do a really high poly coat of arms. Except it's gonna be a gun, an axe, and a shield in front. Now to decide which to use. I want to do a preexisting gun, a warhammer axe, and the legend of zelda shield. I need some detailed inorganic props for my portfolio for some diversity, and I thought this would be a good way to make some very unrelated objects and comp them together.
Here are some of the things I was thinking about using as reference:

Anatomical sculpture

This piece has been done for some 2 months now and I finally had access to a decent camera so I took a few pictures. Tomorrow I will post fliers at the school to see if any photography students would like to help me light and shoot this at a better quality, cuz right now.... ugh....

Anyways, pics should be good enough to get the idea. I'm starting another one, a cartoon character. I hope to be done before next quarter starts up. Should be a much less intensive undertaking, less detail, more exaggeration. WAAAAAY MOAR.

It was done by, not one (phew),but a group of a few students at the Vancouver Film School, the credits are tough to read though. So anyways, no I have been drawing nothing but Shadow of the colossus, panzer dragoon orta, howl's moving castle, and legend of legaia inspire creatures. I'll post some silhouettes later.

Edit: Forgot to mention, the first matcap I made after looking at about a million of em and not finding the one that I wanted. The other 3 were just some really cool ones I found. The first is based on one of sathe's bronze matcaps, and the next three were made by mrpeculiar, Erklaerbar, and klein respectively.

Dominance war is going pretty slow, BUT I SHALL FINISH!!! The clothes will be all but see through, especially in the back, and he will have snarly broken little teeth and some wispy old, dead guy hair. The cloth and hair will be made wispy and tattered with alpha map. PLUS, he will be glowing from inside his chest cavity like a puffer fish lantern. Hopefully bringing in the teeth and eyes will make him look less like he is sneezing. And then onto the horse...

I'm also working on a steam punk robot bird (1/2 done), a tiki head (more like 1/3 done), and pretty soon I'll be starting some low poly environment stuff. After THAT I'm doing a Goya/Rodin homage by recreating Goya's "Saturn devouring his children" but with a rough Rodin sculpture style. This is gonna be a super busy quarter, but I tend to do best with pressure, so here goes!!

It's the end of the quarter so, finally here is some stuff:

First up is the rhino. Really brilliant concept by Chi Duong, I was really glad I finnaly got a chance to model one of her super cute designs. Kind of a Madagascar style, not textured yet. To make it fit the style mroe, I think I may add the concentric nose swirl thing they all have.

Next is the robot. Started it for a contest but i ended up not getting anywhere near done. I do plan to go ahead and finish it. I will do a polished new robot and a battered old rusty robot with the same mesh to practice different texture stuff.

Transformation:
"final" render. I need to drop the horns, they were there to help it fit the contest better, but they don't aid the design much.

And this started as a project for a mythology class as a nazgul from lord of the rings. However I am going to push the design much further to make it more interesting. I plan on making him look as though he is a hollow dried skin stretched over bones, with a glow from inside.

5 hours sculpt

Challenge 13 over at 3d Total was Fear. The provided base mesh was two cubes, one for the head, another for the blindfold.Some other entries were spiders, sharks, drowning, etc. I picked blindness, both figurative and literal. The inability to see the future, the fear of the unknown. And the more literal, the fear of the dark or loss of sight. One of my biggest fears is losing my ability to see, and therefore create anymore art.

p.s. the santa i did earlier got 3rd place. Woo, free book!

Finally got around to doing an actual drawing of the robot I have already started modeling. I'll post the sketches and stuff later.

The basic idea is the robot is powered by a captured forest spirit. I wrote a ridiculously long description/explanation for the contest over on 3dTotal. http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=64414

I went ahead and participated in the 3dTotal forum sculpting contest for xmas. There usually are like 4-10 really epic entries, but so far there are only about 2, so maybe I have a shot! The contest is open to literally anyone, so it's cool to see the different levels of experience. Plus, I can give some tips or advice if anyone has trouble getting something to look right, or how to use certain tools. Anyways:

The first pass was going to be wooden, like a folk art ornament, but I got some advice from Bryan Wynia.

And BAM! totally different character. This was a great exercise and I can't wait for the next one!

Cactus Level

The cactus level from background and environments is FINALLY done! All special effects, animation, programming and such by Nick Dolce. Concept by Yusuke Sato, as well as some modeling and texture maps and the actual layout of the level. Roberto Tercios also helped with modeling and texturing, mostly the armory room weapons. Roberto worked really hard on the assets he was given and learned a lot about the process. Actually we all had to learn a lot because this was the first time any of us had to use the Unreal engine and we had to figure most everything on our own, especially Nick. Anyways:

This is the level! Woo! The player spends a load of time outside running around on bridges and platforms.

Entry room: The player starts here. It's meant to kind fo trick te player into thinking he's in a cave or something. But then he steps out into the blinding desert sunlight to see that he's in a giant cactus.
The next room is the "lobby." It has big piles of fruit, supposedly harvested by the residents of the cactus as well as harvesting tools and the like. Plus, bug swarms!

The armory room: Loads of vases and racks filled with spears, bow and arrow, maces, all made from cactus parts.

The shrine room: Easily the coolest part. This area is meant to be easily recognized as a cathedral-esque room. Complete with totems, pews, and a grigantic goddess statue.

Throughout the level the player uses large crossbows to launch themsleves to distant platforms. This is the last one.

and... eaten....
Stomach room... right now the level just sort of ends. We intended to have some kind of puzzle or boss in here that would cause the cactus to upchuck the player, but time constraints and limited knowledge of unreal was a constant hinderence, even though we were contstanlty researching and learning new stuff.

We aslo have an easter egg. If you look closely as you leave the lobby, you can see an odd painting in an innecesable room.
If you take a leap of faith later on in the level, you can land in the room. It's got some doritos, Yusuke as a katamri guy, some onigiri, a sweet chicken, and a vehicle to fly around in.

All in all it was a good learning experience, but with more info about the engine it could have gone a lot smoother and we could have got way more done. Next quarter I will be doing another level, so I expect some pretty great stuff!

I've been meaning to scan in life drawings for a looong while now and I finally got around to it. Problem is I couldn't find my stuff from last quarter. I think this new stuff is better though so, oh well.

And this quarter's zoo trip! Fun, as always, and the best part I get to see improvement over last quarter.

And some cactus level stuff from Background and Environment.

I was really hoping to get a character in this level, but looks like no... However if I get any free time at all I'm gonna try my best to get a tribal dude in there.

Finally have time to post some stuff!! YAY! This quarter has been super busy, I feel like I have barely even slept. Next one should be really great though, and this break I will be doing some pretty sweet stuff as well. Anyways here is some WIP stuff.

First up, some assets for the level we are building in Background and environments. All concept art by Yusuke. I made other stuff, but mostly unimpressive low poly objects like pots, vases, columns and benches and stuff. I'll post all that when it's textured and in the game (unreal 3 engine).

And of course the actual level itself. Essentially it's a ginormous cactus tower, with loads of little bridges and stuff. The player weaves in and out of hollowed out sections and spirals up some of the cactus "branches". I won't give away the ending just yet, but it's pretty epic.

And this is for the game animation class. During the first part of this quarter I had some free time kinda so I built my own model for the rig. You will be seeing muuuuch more of her soon.

Whew. Tomorrow I will be scanning in TONS of drawings. I haven't scanned anything in for a looong while. I've also got some other stuff in the works including a zombie bear, a robot, and dr. seuss car. Now I just need some time to do it....

Also, I do intend to do a vehicle and some sort of environment for my portfolio, but it will not be in splines or curves or anything like that....

Here is the super simple, almost boring, business card. I seriously hate graphic design. Mainly cuz my montra for design is too add more teeth, eyes, claws, scales, or extra apendages that don't really do anything outside of look cool. Doesn't really apply to business cards.

And the super simple tank I made in Max. That's right, I know BOTH Maya and Max. I should note the poly count is about 2100 for the tank and about 3200 for the treads. I was gonna do rivets too, so like another 3000 polys there. I will probably texture this later on. It should look pretty sweet with a high detail texture, maybe some normal map battle damage??

I also did an internship for GamesThatWork, but I forgot to ask if I could post the thing I did on here. It turned out ok, even though there were some odd glitches I had to work around. More later.

Partly Done and Completely Unfinished Stuff

First up is the ninja boy I did for the Siggraph team project with Heather and PJ at the end of last quarter. It is fully rigged and textured and I plan to put up a video, I'm just trying to figure out the best way to put video on here without it compressing it to a quarter inch square.

This was also started last quarter during a speed modeling challenge in a class. I fixed his geomtry and changed him up a bit. I started texturing him, but got side tracted by other projects and stuff. I was going to make him a cross between a frog, a crab, and a brightly colored tropical fish.

I started the base mesh for this a long while back, and decided to go ahead and finish it so I could play with it in Zbrush. I probably should have just started anew base mesh because this one was a little wonky and I ran out of geometry pretty quick. I hit my 8mil cap waaay before I could put in the kind of geometry I wanted.

Still, good practice nonetheless. Kinda looks the same as the stack bug from before though...

I have also started a robot that is a mashup of several Wall-e characters. I only have a little bit done in maya, but before I progress any further I'm gonna take a step back and do some sweet concept art for his internal pieces.

Now that I FINALY got to play Portal, I think I may try to throw some Gladus in there too.

Yes, I beleive it was.

I was talking to Elio last quarter about what i was putting together this break, and he suggested i do a model of something ridiculously simple in contrast to the more complicated stuff i want to do. So, i worked out a chicken guy that is basically like 4 lines or something.

I also Plan to rig and animate him for a class next quarter, something tells me it will either work perfectly, or be a total failure and I will have to use the ninja kid I made, but for some reason didn't post....

I did the base mesh for this guy for a class last quarter, but even with a texture, i was unhappey with it, so I took him into Zbrush and made it better. The texture doesn't fit anymore so I will need to tweak it to make it fit again, and Later I will add some seems and other minor details, but it's done for now so that I can move onto much cool projects!

El Grande Stack Bug - WIP

I've been super busy lately and am going to be even more so for the next few weeks, so I have been trying to work on this any chance I get.

This is one of the many stack bugs Elio designed for El Grande. These creatures inhabit the gigantic futuristic chimneys that pump filth from the ground floor all the way to the stratoshpere.

The scuba guy was a 2-3 hour model. We did the concept and all, start to finish in one class. I'll be doing more to it. We also did a 30 minute model. More on that later. Anyways, the 2-3 hour guy was a scuba warrior type guy. And, some walk cycles.

I think the biggest thing I got out of the production video (Smile) I saw from modeling last quarter was how well the guy in the video reused his old geometry form other stuff. So, it seemed like a good idea to find some turnarounds of really acurate and average male and female. I found some forum with scans out of an anatomy book.

Anyways, I started this yesterday and got it mostly blocked out. He still has mitten hands and feet (no fingers yet), his face is off, and it needs a little tweeking. I tried to keep the geometry super low and I'm going to make another version with no real face, just a few basic planes.

Gladiator: part 2

I didn't really like my final gladiator head texture. Well, I did, but it was more of a happy accident than anything, plus this gave me an excuse to figure out how to use painting in Zbrush as well as how to make movies. Turns out both things are super easy. I think I might paint the entire guy over again now that I figured out how to use the eyedropper.

Also, Warhammer Online has a limited edition game bundle with tons of concept art (500 pages) plus a ticket for beta. I have their site on the side bar.

One more thing. 11 minutes of pure insanity. Think Metal slug meets super-happy-big-headed-chibi-anime cuteness meets a serial killer's imagination on LSD.

Space Goat

I friggin finally finished the space goat. I was working on it off and on last quarter, but barely any because of classes. I put some basic materials on it just so I don't have to actually texture it. Anyways, some concept art first:

And the Zbrush sculpt. I changed up the tail, added patterns on the hoove gauntlets, added chicken legs, and made the wing a little different.

I think I made the leg muscles/bones a little too understated.

The wing looks silly and cartoony because it's not feathers. It's some kinda plasma warp drive. It doesn't work though, the other one (red) broke off when he entered the earth's atmosphere.

So, now I get to decide what to do with the rest of my break. I guess I'll have time to think it over while I'm stuck at my grandma's house this weekend in the middle of the woods in Tennessee. Ugh.... pretty scenery though.

Well, its finally finished... kinda. If I end up needing an extra peice for portfolio or something I will definatly touch up like 15 different things, especially the texturing. There are alot of places that could be much better, but this is the best thing I have done in zBrush this far.

And in maya with textures on:

I just realized i have the eyes wrong. The blind (white) eye should be where the slash is. Although the slash isnt showing up in maya... oh well.

Over the break I will finish up the space goat and the jitterbug. I will get the modeling/sculpting done before I start on the texture for either one.

If anyone wants to see something at a better angle or with armor removed, etc, just leave a comment.

Holy $#!T !! It's been a while since I posted one of these. A few things have been keeping me from doing these more often. It's, partly because of school work and a few models i'm working on on the side and partly laziness. After I do Z (maybe tomarrow). I'm gonna do one every day. It only takes a half an hour, and I usually watch TV while I do them. I think the distraction kinda helps.

Anyways, Yuccas are not a type of cactus. They are succulents.

I'm not really sure what the difference is because yucas have spikes and spines too. Big ones, like splinters.

Anyways, the majority of these are 30 sec or 1 minute gestures. The first three are like 5 mins from memory (the model posed, then walked away, then we drew).

Finally finished my first zBrush head. I wouldn't say it was difficult so much as severely time consuming and tedious, especially the parts I had to tweak like a million times. I left the eyes and shirt off, they didn't look as good as the head. Textures were too bright or shiny or something. Next one will be better!
